I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn’t really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going.

Fortunately we’re not a public company – we’re a private group of companies, and I can do what I want.

My mother was determined to make us independent. When I was four years old, she stopped the car a few miles from our house and made me find my own way home across the fields. I got hopelessly lost.

Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.

And you know, I’ve had great fun turning quite a lot of different industries on their head and making sure those industries will never be the same again, because Virgin went in and took them on.

Right now I’m just delighted to be alive and to have had a nice long bath.

I don’t think so, in that Virgin is already a global brand. Brands like Amazon have had to spend hundreds of millions of pounds you know, building their brands, whereas Virgin is already well-known around the world.

So I’ve seen life as one long learning process. And if I see – you know, if I fly on somebody else’s airline and find the experience is not a pleasant one, which it wasn’t in – 21 years ago, then I’d think, well, you know, maybe I can create the kind of airline that I’d like to fly on.

I love the freedom of movement that my phone gives me. That has definitely transformed my life.

Nobody’s ever called me Sir Richard. Occasionally in America, I hear people saying Sir Richard and think there’s some Shakespearean play taking place. But nowhere else anyway.

I never get the accountants in before I start up a business. It’s done on gut feeling, especially if I can see that they are taking the mickey out of the consumer.

Ridiculous yachts and private planes and big limousines won’t make people enjoy life more, and it sends out terrible messages to the people who work for them. It would be so much better if that money was spent in Africa – and it’s about getting a balance.

Like getting into a bleeding competition with a blood bank.

And obviously, from our own personal point of view, the principal challenge is a personal challenge.

I was dyslexic, I had no understanding of schoolwork whatsoever. I certainly would have failed IQ tests. And it was one of the reasons I left school when I was 15 years old. And if I – if I’m not interested in something, I don’t grasp it.

I cannot remember a moment in my life when I have not felt the love of my family. We were a family that would have killed for each other – and we still are.

A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.

The balloons only have one life and the only way of finding out whether they work is to attempt to fly around the world.

I believe in benevolent dictatorship provided I am the dictator.

Lightning is something which, again, we would rather avoid.

A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.

Getting older is no problem. You just have to live long enough.

A man’s only as old as the woman he feels.

A hospital bed is a parked taxi with the meter running.

I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it.

From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it.

All people are born alike – except Republicans and Democrats.

Alimony is like buying hay for a dead horse.

A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.

Behind every successful man is a woman, behind her is his wife.

Before I speak, I have something important to say.

A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.

Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot.

I didn’t like the play, but then I saw it under adverse conditions – the curtain was up.

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.

Go, and never darken my towels again.

Humor is reason gone mad.

Either he’s dead or my watch has stopped.

I don’t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.

I have a mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.

A whole album to one writer – now that would be really interesting.

Growing up I used to love bands like Free and ELO and the Rolling Stones. When Robert Plant got in touch it made perfect sense to me.

If you don’t know what makes green, you’re going to try every color combination.

Songs come from all over the place. You can’t predict what you’re going to like. You might like something that doesn’t fit right now. What was working for you at one point, something you’ve loved for years and years, when you get together with everybody, you think, this doesn’t match up with what’s going on with you personally.

Lyrics are kind of the whole thing; it’s the message. Something might have a beautiful melody but if it’s not the truth coming out of your mouth, it’s not appealing.

You know, if you really want to fiddle the old-time way, you’ve got to learn the dance. The contra-dances, hoedowns. It’s all in the rhythm of the bow. The great North Carolina fiddle player Tommy Jarrell said, ‘If a feller can’t bow, he’ll never make a fiddler. He might make a violin player, but he’ll never make no fiddler.’

I don’t go there much. You’re thrilled that people would recognize what you’re doing in such a grand kind of way. But, just like you don’t know if anybody’s really going to like what you’re doing when you put a record out or if anybody’s going to pay attention to it, you can’t really go there.

That’s what I love. Not being interrupted, sitting in a car by myself and listening to music in the rain. There are so many great songs yet to sing.

When it’s open and honest, that’s when the real nature of who you are as a vocalist or as a performer, all of that stuff can finally start to become what it’s supposed to be. Like a settling into yourself. It’s not even a musical thing, it’s a whole mindset, a whole acceptance of who you were supposed to be. Life sounds good.

I don’t get recognized in London or at home either – very seldom anyway. Either that or I look so crazy no one wants to come up to me.

It’s not that I have resisted songwriting, it’s just not something I felt I have had to do. I’ve just not woken up and thought, I must do this. But I have often heard music that I have instantly felt ‘I have to sing that song’.

The grand old lady of bluegrass? Well, wouldn’t that be a wonderful title to have? I hope I do enough to earn it some day.

Both the American people and nations that censor the internet should understand that our government is committed to helping promote internet freedom.

As I speak to you today, government censors somewhere are working furiously to erase my words from the records of history. But history itself has already condemned these tactics.

I will not comment on or confirm what are alleged to be stolen State Department cables. But I can say that the United States deeply regrets the disclosure of any information that was intended to be confidential, including private discussions between counterparts or our diplomats’ personal assessments and observations.

For centuries, New York has served as the gateway for millions of people from all over the world in search of the American dream. It only makes sense that it would now serve as a gateway for the world’s greatest athletes.

Every president, if you watch what they look like when they come into office, you can see their hair turn white because it’s such a hard job.

I think I will serve as secretary of state as my last public position.

I’m undaunted in my quest to amuse myself by constantly changing my hair.

I feel very lucky because of my parents and then my education, the opportunities that I’ve had, so I would like to continue working to improve lives for others.

I believe in a zone of privacy.

I think that we have to be constantly asking ourselves, ‘How do we calculate the risk?’ And sometimes we don’t calculate it correctly; we either overstate it or understate it.

In the Bible it says they asked Jesus how many times you should forgive, and he said 70 times 7. Well, I want you all to know that I’m keeping a chart.

In the aftermath of September 11, and as the 9/11 Commission report so aptly demonstrates, it is clear that our intelligence system is not working the way that it should.

All of us have to recognize that we owe our children more than we have been giving them.

In too many instances, the march to globalization has also meant the marginalization of women and girls. And that must change.

I also believe that we have an extraordinary opportunity for the United States and European Union to lead the world in developing and implementing new and more efficient technologies – smart electrical grids and electrical vehicles.

If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle.

Every nation has to either be with us, or against us. Those who harbor terrorists, or who finance them, are going to pay a price.

Countries that will not tax their elite who expect us to come in and help them serve their people are just not going to get the kind of help from us that historically they may have.

I’m not going to have some reporters pawing through our papers. We are the president.

In almost every profession – whether it’s law or journalism, finance or medicine or academia or running a small business – people rely on confidential communications to do their jobs. We count on the space of trust that confidentiality provides. When someone breaches that trust, we are all worse off for it.

Rock stars get room keys, I get business cards.

The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention argues that no two countries that are both part of the same global supply chain will ever fight a war as long as they are each part of that supply chain.

Several technological and political forces have converged, and that has produced a global, Web-enabled playing field that allows for multiple forms of collaboration without regard to geography or distance – or soon, even language.

Basically all the world’s computer parts come from the same supply chain that runs from Korea, down through coastal China, over to Taiwan, and down to Malaysia.

I think we have lost our groove as a country. One of the reasons was the attack on 9/11. We got knocked off our game. From a country that always exported hope we went into the business of exporting fear.

America needs rebooting.

By ‘flat’ I did not mean that the world is getting equal. I said that more people in more places can now compete, connect and collaborate with equal power and equal tools than ever before. That’s why an Indian in Bangalore can take care of the office work of American doctors or read the X-rays of German hospitals.

It created a global platform that allowed more people to plug and play, collaborate and compete, share knowledge and share work, than anything we have ever seen in the history of the world.

If you followed this economic crisis and you do not think that the world is getting flatter, you are not paying attention. We saw the entire global economy at one time acting totally in sync. The real truth is the world is even flatter than I thought. Our mortgage crisis is killing Deutsche Bank. You still don’t think the world is flat?

Al Qaeda is nothing more than a mutant supply chain. They’re playing off the same platform as Wal-Mart and Dell. They’re just not restrained by it. What is al Qaeda? It’s an open source religious political movement that works off the global supply chain. That’s what we’re up against in Iraq. We’re up against a suicide supply chain.

McDonald’s cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15.

Supply chains cannot tolerate even 24 hours of disruption. So if you lose your place in the supply chain because of wild behavior you could lose a lot. It would be like pouring cement down one of your oil wells.

No, most of our political elite has not realized that the world is flat.

If you don’t visit the bad neighborhoods, the bad neighborhoods are going to visit you.

I am hoping, though, that many of them have kids, who, when they have a moment to take a break from their iPods, Internet, or Google, will explain to their parents running the country just how the world is being flattened.

I was in Bangalore, India, the Silicon Valley of India, when I realized that the world was flat.

I firmly believe that the next great breakthrough in bioscience could come from a 15-year-old who downloads the human genome in Egypt.

I have a daughter who is a sophomore in college and another who is in the 11th grade of high school.

I basically did all the library research for this book on Google, and it not only saved me enormous amounts of time but actually gave me a much richer offering of research in a shorter time.

Sometimes, when my wife and I were going out to dinner, I would take my laptop with me and work in the car, so as to take advantage of the half hour going and coming.

And if I were the president, I’d go out there and I’d emphasize the things I have done, and I’d say, ‘Some things haven’t worked, and I’m sorry about that, but I keep trying.’ And I’m – and I think the president is a very viable candidate, and you’re going to have a real horse race here no matter who the Republican nominee is.

Canada sets aside 36 percent of their visas for people with skills they think their country needs. We set aside six percent. We educate the doctors, and then don’t give ‘em a green card.

And I think the more money you put in people’s hands, the more they will spend And if they don’t spend it, they invest it. And investing it is another way of creating jobs. It puts money into mutual funds or other kinds of banks that can go out and make loans, and we need to do that.

I think if you look at people, whether in business or government, who haven’t had any moral compass, who’ve just changed to say whatever they thought the popular thing was, in the end they’re losers.

I am what I am and, you know, I’m a very lucky guy.

If Warren Buffett made his money from ordinary income rather than capital gains, his tax rate would be a lot higher than his secretary’s. In fact a very small percentage of people in this country pay a big chunk of the taxes.

It is exactly because we are a city that embraces freedom, that welcomes everyone and encourages their dreams, that New York remains on the front lines in the war on terror.

No place epitomizes the American experience and the American spirit more than New York City.

It’s no fun to protest on an empty stomach.

On Sept. 11, 2001, thousands of first responders heroically rushed to the scene and saved tens of thousands of lives. More than 400 of those first responders did not make it out alive. In rushing into those burning buildings, not one of them asked, ‘What God do you pray to?’ What beliefs do you hold?’

People have no confidence that Washington, both sides of aisle, are coming together to try and do what’s right for the economy.

I think we are not serious about attacking the long-term debt problem, and that’s one of the things that he’s going to have to find a way to get on the agenda.

And I keep saying, whether you like the president or not, everybody has to pull together and help the president because, as the president goes, so goes the country, as the country goes, so goes your job, your ability to feed your family, your government.

Many of America’s and New York’s sons and daughters are around the world fighting for the freedoms that the Statue of Liberty stands for.

I’ve got the greatest job in the world. There’s no other job in government where cause and effect is so tightly coupled where you can make a difference every day in so many different ways and in so many different people’s lives. It’s a great challenge.

Ironically, it is exactly because we are a city that embraces freedom, that welcomes everyone and encourages their dreams, that New York remains on the front lines in the war on terror.

And because no matter who you are, if you believe in yourself and your dream, New York will always be the place for you.

Every one of my positions cuts – out half the country. I’m pro-choice, I’m pro-gay rights, I’m pro-immigration, I’m against guns, I believe in Darwin.

Taxes are not good things, but if you want services, somebody’s got to pay for them so they’re a necessary evil.

The cold harsh reality is that we have to balance the budget.

Angela Merkel Quotes

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel

I don’t carry any early childhood trauma around with me, if that’s what you’re hinting at. The story of the bicycles – and there were three of them which were stolen from me – I’ve dealt with it well.

At this time – we’re in a dramatic crisis – euro bonds are precisely the wrong answer. They lead us into a debt union, not a stability union. Each country has to take its own steps to reduce its debt.

Herr Schroder has conducted two electoral campaigns, and he is doing it again now, by not telling people what is really necessary. He keeps avoiding the difficult and uncomfortable issues, those that imply changes and therefore provoke discussions.

I will not let anyone tell me we must spend more money. This crisis did not come about because we issued too little money but because we created economic growth with too much money and it was not sustainable growth.

In Europe it is particularly important that we build good relations to everyone who holds political responsibility because Europe can only be build together.

As politicians we have to react to the fact that many people do not feel that they can relate to the EU.

I said, yet again, for Germany, Europe is not only indispensable, it is part and parcel of our identity. We’ve always said German unity, European unity and integration, that’s two parts of one and the same coin. But we want, obviously, to boost our competitiveness.

From this experience we have learned that in a big party it is important to have the necessary and often controversial discussions on policy issues such as the health system while in opposition.

Above all it is important to point out that we can only maintain our prosperity in Europe if we belong to the most innovative regions in the world.

If we remind ourselves of the fact that every fifth American today rightly points and perhaps also with a certain degree of pride to his German ancestry or her German ancestry, we can safely say that we, indeed, share common roots.

I felt really sorry for Oliver Kahn. Up to that point he had made lots of saves for the German team. Of course he could have caught the ball but it just happened. It was bad luck. In that situation, you need to be very strong psychologically to carry on.

In the German football team players from different clubs need to get on with each other both on and off the pitch. In the grand coalition Christian Democrats and Social Democrats sit in the same boat and need to pull in the same direction.

I have just explained my idea of how a constructive period of reflection, one that would send a clear message to the citizens of Europe: You should now what our priorities are. For Germany this means: Unemployment is one of one of our biggest problems.

I feel sorry sometimes for these sportsmen and women who put in just as much effort as the footballers. For example, athletes train at least as hard as footballers but have to be happy if they can earn enough to finance a decent education.

I see nothing that points to a recession in Germany. But I see considerable long-term tasks ahead of us that have to do with markets regaining confidence in Europe and that have a lot to do with reducing debt.

At the beginning of the 60’s our country called the foreign workers to come to Germany and now they live in our country. We kidded ourselves a while, we said: ‘They won’t stay, sometime they will be gone.’ But this isn’t reality.

Eurobonds are absolutely wrong. In order to bring about common interest rates, you need similar competitiveness levels, similar budget situations. You don’t get them by collectivizing debts.

I am not an expert in this field but I do try to keep up to date with the Bundesliga. And I do follow World Cups and European Championships more closely.

I think that the EU with the Lisbon agenda has put the right emphasis on growth and employment.

For a few years, more people have been leaving our country than entering it. Wherever it is possible, we must lower the entry hurdles for those who bring the country forward.

America is a mistake, a giant mistake.

A civilization which leaves so large a number of its participants unsatisfied and drives them into revolt neither has nor deserves the prospect of a lasting existence.

He does not believe that does not live according to his belief .

Flowers are restful to look at. They have neither emotions nor conflicts.

Civilized society is perpetually menaced with disintegration through this primary hostility of men towards one another.

A certain degree of neurosis is of inestimable value as a drive, especially to a psychologist.

A man who has been the indisputable favorite of his mother keeps for life the feeling of a conqueror.

He that has eyes to see and ears to hear may convince himself that no mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips; betrayal oozes out of him at every pore.

Dreams are often most profound when they seem the most crazy.

Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.

A man should not strive to eliminate his complexes but to get into accord with them: they are legitimately what directs his conduct in the world.

Anatomy is destiny.

Children are completely egoistic; they feel their needs intensely and strive ruthlessly to satisfy them.

A belligerent state permits itself every such misdeed, every such act of violence, as would disgrace the individual.

Civilization began the first time an angry person cast a word instead of a rock.

America is the most grandiose experiment the world has seen, but, I am afraid, it is not going to be a success.

Every normal person, in fact, is only normal on the average. His ego approximates to that of the psychotic in some part or other and to a greater or lesser extent.

Analysis does not set out to make pathological reactions impossible, but to give the patient’s ego freedom to decide one way or another.

Analogies, it is true, decide nothing, but they can make one feel more at home.

Everywhere I go I find that a poet has been there before me.

Getting things done in this country, if you want to build something, if you want to start a company, it’s getting to be virtually impossible with all of the bureaucracy and all of the approvals.

As long as your going to be thinking anyway, think big.

Do you mind if I sit back a little? Because your breath is very bad.

I support health care for people. I want people well taken care of. But I also want health care that we can afford as a country. I have people and friends closing down their businesses because of Obamacare.

Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you’re generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don’t make.

I have made the tough decisions, always with an eye toward the bottom line. Perhaps it’s time America was run like a business.

All of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me – consciously or unconsciously. That’s to be expected.

I mean, there’s no arguing. There is no anything. There is no beating around the bush. “You’re fired” is a very strong term.

I could never have imagined that firing 67 people on national television would actually make me more popular, especially with the younger generation.

Everything in life is luck.

China gets their oil from Libya. Why isn’t China involved? They’re going out spending billions of dollars a day on trying to take over the world economically. And we’re spending billions and billions and billions of dollars on policing the world. Why isn’t China involved with Libya? That – we don’t get oil from Libya, China does.

Every time you walk down the street people are screaming, ‘You’re fired!’

I like thinking big. If you’re going to be thinking anything, you might as well think big.

Anyone who thinks my story is anywhere near over is sadly mistaken.

I don’t make deals for the money. I’ve got enough, much more than I’ll ever need. I do it to do it.

I saw a report yesterday. There’s so much oil, all over the world, they don’t know where to dump it. And Saudi Arabia says, ‘Oh, there’s too much oil.’ They – they came back yesterday. Did you see the report? They want to reduce oil production. Do you think they’re our friends? They’re not our friends.

But I believe in fair trade, and I will tell you, I have many, many friends heading up corporations, and people that do just business in China, they say it’s virtually impossible. It’s very, very hard to come into China. And yet, we welcome them with open arms.

A little more moderation would be good. Of course, my life hasn’t exactly been one of moderation.

Surplus wealth is a sacred trust which its possessor is bound to administer in his lifetime for the good of the community.

Every act you have ever performed since the day you were born was performed because you wanted something.

Aim for the highest.

Mr. Morgan buys his partners; I grow my own.

People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity, no matter how impressive their other talents.

I shall argue that strong men, conversely, know when to compromise and that all principles can be compromised to serve a greater principle.

I would as soon leave my son a curse as the almighty dollar.

No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit.

Concentrate your energies, your thoughts and your capital. The wise man puts all his eggs in one basket and watches the basket.

Do your duty and a little more and the future will take care of itself.

The ‘morality of compromise’ sounds contradictory. Compromise is usually a sign of weakness, or an admission of defeat. Strong men don’t compromise, it is said, and principles should never be compromised.

I resolved to stop accumulating and begin the infinitely more serious and difficult task of wise distribution.

Immense power is acquired by assuring yourself in your secret reveries that you were born to control affairs.

All honor’s wounds are self-inflicted.
